Shinde said late on Monday (August 26) evening that the wind was blowing at a speed of 45 km per hour, due to which the statue fell. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has blamed strong winds for the collapse of the 8-month-old statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg. CM said- Navy had designed and constructed the 35 feet high statue of Shivaji Maharaj. We will build it back stronger. PWD and Navy officials will visit Sindhudurg on Tuesday (August 27) to investigate the incident.

  • The statue of Shivaji Maharaj built at Rajkot Fort in coastal Sindhudurg district had fallen at 1 pm on Monday (August 26). It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Navy Day on December 4, 2024. Police have registered an FIR against contractor Jaideep Apte and structural consultant Chetan Patil in the case.
  • The engineer said that he had simply submitted the design of the platform to the Indian Navy through the public works department.The 35-foot statue, which was unveiled only nine months before this incident by prime minister Narendra Modi, collapsed on August 26 and has since then ignited outrage.

The collapse of the statue has triggered a significant political controversy, with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition criticising the Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP government and demanding Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s resignation. The NCP, led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, announced plans for ‘silent’ protests across Maharashtra on Thursday to express their outrage and demand the installation of a stronger and larger statue at the same site.

A structural engineer, who was named in an FIR registered over collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue at Fort Rajkot in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurga on Wednesday claimed that he was not the structural consultant for the project and had only worked on the platform.Chetan Patil, the structural engineer, spoke to Marathi news channel ABP Majha, after he was named in the FIR along with contractor Jaydeep Apte, saying that he did not have anything to do with the statue.

FIR filed against contractor

An FIR has been lodged against the contractor responsible for the construction of the 35-foot statue, which collapsed just eight months after being unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4, 2023. The complaint was filed by the Public Works Department (PWD), which cited poor construction quality, noting that the nuts and bolts used in the statue were found to be rusted.

The Congress has also asked prime minister Modi if he will apologise for the statue of a respected figure in history, being built in a hurried manner and with low quality.Congress’ general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, shared a video on X in which former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru is seen inaugurating a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Pratapgad on November 30, 1957. “67 years later, the statue still stands tall and undamaged,” Ramesh said in a clear jibe to PM Modi and the Maharashtra state government.

This statue, known as the Shiv Smarak, was designed to honor Shivaji Maharaj and his legacy. Its damage was met with a great deal of concern and disappointment among his admirers and the local community. The authorities and preservationists have since been involved in assessing the damage and planning for necessary repairs and restoration.
